"All people, regardless of the severity of their disabilities, are entitled to community living."

- The Community Imperative, 1979

We invite you to support the California Community Imperative conference, a unique and historical event scheduled for January 25-26, 2002 in Oakland, California.  Anticipated attendance is between 800 and 1,000 people with disabilities, family members, policy makers, educators, professionals, administrators, direct support staff, advocates, and others.  The conference will feature nationally and regionally prominent speakers.  We have enclosed a brief description of the conference.

The purpose of the Community Imperative conference is to revisit the fundamental values and beliefs that have inspired the disability rights movement, focus on current challenges to the full integration of people with disabilities in society, and launch a continuing effort to achieve inclusion for all Californians with developmental disabilities.

The conference takes its name from the Community Imperative declaration issued in 1979 by the Center on Human Policy at Syracuse University.  This declaration emerged in response to resistance to community living for people with disabilities, and especially those with severe cognitive disabilities.  The Community Imperative endorses the rights of all people with disabilities to community living.

The Center on Human Policy reissued the Community Imperative in Spring 2000.  Since that time it has been endorsed by the over 100 organizations and over 400 individuals.  Among the national endorsers are ADAPT, the American Association on Mental Retardation, the Arc of the United States, the National Coalition on Self-Determination, the National Parent Network on Disability, and TASH.  California endorsers are listed in the enclosures.

Organizations can support this conference in two ways.  We invite California organizations to lend their names as co-sponsors of the conference.  Co-sponsors are organizations that will have endorsed the Community Imperative declaration and agreed to publicize the conference among their members.  Financial contributions and volunteer assistance from co-sponsors are welcome.

Co-sponsors and others can also serve as supporting organizations.  In order to encourage attendance at the conference, the registration fee will be $35, with waivers upon request.  We need financial support to offer travel stipends to people with disabilities and family members who would not otherwise be able to attend and to cover other conference expenses.

Supporting organizations can contribute to the conference at two levels.

For $500-999, supporting organizations will receive five free registrations and public acknowledgement, including a listing on the conference program and other materials.

For contributions of $1,000 and over, supporting organizations will receive ten free registrations, recognition on the conference website, public acknowledgement, and a banner with their names prominently displayed at the conference.

We hope that you will join this important effort by becoming a co-sponsor and/or a supporting organization. If you have any questions, ideas or suggestions about the conference, please feel free to call us at 805-566-7664 or e-mail the Alliance.

To become a co-sponsor or supporting organization, please contact the California Alliance for Inclusive Communities, Inc.  Checks should be made payable to the California Alliance for Inclusive Communities, Inc.  Individual contributions will be tax-deductible.  Mail contributions to:
